Module positions in Joomla are basically empty buckets on your website where you could insert additional content. When these “empty buckets” are filled, they show particular content on the website. If not, they typically are collapsed and don’t take up any space.
Here is a sample template where I highlight its module positions:

To find module positions for your Joomla template:
- Navigate to Extensions → Template Manager → Options → Preview Module Positions → Enabled → Save
- Go to the frontpage of your website.
- Add following string /tp?=1 after your domain name (example: mydomain.com/?tp=1)
To place a module within a particular module position, within the particular module, please choose the module position:
- Navigate to Extensions → Module Manager
- Choose your module from the module list
- Within the “Details” section of your module configuration, choose “Select Position”

To find all modules places in a particular module position, choose the desired module position within the module list.
- Navigate to Extensions → Module Manager
- From the filters choose “Select Positions”
- Choose desired position from the drop down menu.
